Chain maintenance and repair is a lot of work, even when you are in the cozy environment of your garage or shop. Having to repair a chain on your dirt bike while out on the trail is an even more difficult job. With most modern chains you not only need a chain breaker, but also a tool to press off and on the side plates of the master link. Even with clip type master links, the side plates press on with a very tight fit to make the link as strong as possible, and you need a chain press tool to assemble them. Most chain breakers that are capable of doing all this are large and heavy, and carrying one in your tool pack turns it into a boat anchor that you dread wearing on the trail.
Motion Pro spends a lot of time on the trail, and we hate boat anchors too. In the past few years, Motion Pro has created many lightweight and durable tools for the trail that will lighten the load in your tool pack. Our T6 forged aluminum Combo Tire Levers are achieving legendary status amongst trail riders and off road racers.
Another tool with light weight and durability in a compact package is our T6 Chain Tool. Made of high quality 7075 aluminum and a chromoly steel forging for the body, this tool is super strong, compact and versatile. A standard chain tool weighs almost 12 ounces, which doesn't seem like a lot, but try carrying one around all day. The T6 Chain Tool is less than half the weight of a standard tool, at 5.5 ounces, and yet it still has all the durability and strength to break even the strongest off road chains.
What about all that hassle about press on master links? The T6 Chain Tool kit also comes with two sets of press plates to press off and on the side plate of a master link. No more prying with a screwdriver to get the side plate off and perhaps damaging the all-important chain o-rings. The plates are color coded and only fit into the tool in one way, so there is no guess work to use them.
The whole T6 Chain Tool comes in its own nylon case, with elastic loops to keep everything organized, and prevent the tool from being damaged while bouncing around on the trail. There is also a small Velcro closed pocket to keep spare chain parts in.
Going even further, Motion Pro designed the T6 Chain Tool to work together with the Motion Pro MP Tool (p/n 08-0161). The chain tool handle can be replaced with the 8mm driver handle from the MP tool, and the other end of the 8mm handle is a 14mm socket that can be used to drive the chain pin out. Motion Pro also offers a 1/4 inch square drive adaptor (p/n 08-0416) that will fit in the handle of the T6 chain tool allowing it to be used as a 1/4 inch socket driver. Just add your favorite sockets! Either way, you can eliminate the need to carry extra tools and save even more weight.
No one plans to have to work on their bike during a ride, but if you ride a lot, it will happen someday. Be prepared with the best and lightest tools you can get, make sure to load up your tool pack with Motion Pro tools.
