HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (January 22, 2012) – For only the second time Monster Energy AMA Supercross took place at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif. 35,741 fans braved the threat of rain to watch the action. CBS will air the original broadcast from Dodger Stadium today at noon (EST).
Due to weather, the practice and qualifying schedule was shortened to just one session. James Stewart set a very fast time (the fastest to that point) on lap three but then suffered a hard crash in the whoop section, causing him to retire to the pits with only three laps on the track. He still qualified second with Davi Millsaps fourth.
The rain held off and the track was perfect for the event. Stewart and Millsaps both transferred to the main directly from the first heat race, with Stewart claiming his third straight heat race win. Uncharacteristically there were two drops of the gate for the main event. On the first lap of the main Trey Canard and Ryan Morias tangled rendering both unconscious causing the race to be red flagged to insure the safety of the medics and riders. Both riders are expected to make full recoveries and the JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha Team will keep Trey and Ryan in their prayers. On the re-start Stewart began the race in podium contention with Millsaps in eighth. Millsaps worked his way up to sixth on lap 13 which is where he would finish, with Stewart claiming his first podium of the 2012 season in third.
Round four of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship will be Jan. 28 at the Oakland Alameda Coliseum in Oakland, Calif. CBS will air the original broadcast from Oakland at noon (EST) on Jan. 29.
