HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (February 5, 2012) – Round five of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship took place last night at Angel Stadium of Anaheim in Anaheim. The stadium was sold out. CBS will air the original broadcast today at noon (EST).
For the first time this season both JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha Team riders faced challenges during their respective heat races. James Stewart looked to be on his way to a fifth straight heat race victory when he suffered a hard crash taking him out of the race and forcing him to the last chance qualifier (LCQ). Davi Millsaps was leading his heat when he fell. Millsaps was able to remount and still finish in a qualifying position and avoid the LCQ. Stewart easily won the LCQ and secured a position on the gate for the main event.
During intermission before the main event, Joe Gibbs Racing Sprint Cup driver Joey Logano drove his number 20 Home Depot Toyota Camry onto the track doing donuts for the crowd and the CBS cameras. The event was Logano’s first supercross and he enjoyed the day signing autographs and spending time at the Toyota display area in the pits.
Because Stewart transferred to the main from the LCQ he had a poor gate pick, he was still able to work his way inside the top-five on the first lap with Millsaps just behind him. On lap eight Stewart moved into second position while Millsaps was sixth. At the checkers Stewart took his third consecutive podium finish in second, Millsaps was seventh.
