Destry's Endurocross Race From Denver, Co.Oct 14, 2013
October 12, 2013
We had to get to the track early Saturday morning, because Cooper was racing the day show and trying to qualify for the night program. He did awesome, but narrowly missed it and had to settle for being my mechanic again for the evening program. At 2:00 is was track walk time for the rest of the racers. The track looked really good and had some great technical sections with some faster stuff too. This is one of the biggest spaces we have in the Endurocross series and they took full advantage of it.
I had the 5th gate pick, and this time had practiced a lot more starts coming into it. The last round my horrible starts just killed me! In the heat they take three to the main event and it's always a lot nicer to get out of the heat and not have to go to the LCQ. I had a great jump and was third into the first corner, but I tangled with someone over the first obstacle and lost quite a few spots. Then there was a little pileup in the second corner and I made a few spots back up. Now I was in 5th with Cody Webb, Justin Soule, Geoff Aaron, and Max Gerston in front of me. After the first few laps it was a freight train! We were all together, and had built up a gap on the guys behind us. I was trying to get by Max, but was just having a tough time. On lap four I went down in the rock corner, but still was able to get up and finish 5th and off to the LCQ!
Of Course Taddy Blazusiak had a tough time in his heat and was in my LCQ along with Sandoval, Prochnau, Rhoten, Dietrich, and a lot more. Only two go to the main, so it was going to be tough! I had the second gate pick and knew I needed a great start! Taddy was just inside me and we both had great jumps, but he went a little wide in the first corner. I tucked under him and couldn't make the double out of the first corner like he did which put me back to second. I actually really struggled the first lap and Taddy was able to get away. Then I started to feel better, but had Ricky Dietrich all over me with guys right behind him. I believe it was the next lap he came in on me in the wood pile corner and made the pass. I stayed right on him for the next two laps and felt faster in the matrix and rock pile section. Now it was the white flag lap, and I knew it was go time if I wanted to make the main. As soon as we got the white flag we went into the Matrix section and I hammered it! We came out side by side, but I had the inside this time and was able to push him a little wide to take the spot. I really had to protect the inside lines everywhere, since I had the last spot into the main. Luckily I was able to hold him off and was into the main!
This year, before the main event they do another hot lap to determine our gate pick for the race (which I really like and so do the fans). I had a pretty good lap and qualified 8th fastest out of the 13 in the main event. I’d been getting good starts all night and felt I could do it again! It was definitely my best jump and I was right there coming into the first corner, but the guys inside pushed a little wide. I believe I still was 5th or so off the start. Once again I struggled the first lap and didn't have the aggression I would've liked. I made one mistake and it cost me and I was now already back in 11th. Everyone was really close, but I just didn't want to try and hit guys this early in the main event. I was playing it safe at first to feel it out. A few laps in I was able to get into 10th and was feeling good, since there were still a lot of guys right in front of me. However, I still had Roper right behind me! Laps kept passing and before I knew it we were getting the two lap sign. I knew I was going to have to get aggressive now, but it was right at the point in the race that it was going to be too close to try and make a move. Then on the white flag Geoff made a mistake out of the rock corner and I was able to squeak by. Graffunder was a little less then 2-seconds ahead with Soule not far in front of him. To late to get anything done, and I finished with a 9th in the main.
I honestly can't say I'm too disappointed with my ride in the main. My endurance has gotten a lot better, but I need to work on my aggression early in the race. My speed wasn't bad and considering I'm finally getting more seat time from my injuries it felt good getting into the main and building on it. I'm starting to feel more like myself again and just need to build off it!!!

I was so proud of my son Cooper. He raced the amateur and expert classes in the morning. He just missed out by one spot to make it into the amateur main event night show. Then in the expert class he also missed it by one spot. If he would've qualified for that class, he would be on the line with me! That would've been awesome and with the way he's riding he's not far off. Coop has been training hard and it's really showing how far he's come! He also did an awesome job as my mechanic for the night show.
Super pumped with one of my DA8 riders David Broderick! He pulled off the Amateur main event win and was even riding with an injury! He rode exactly like he should and it was awesome to see him pull off the win!
If you didn't make it to Denver make sure you set your DVR to Mavtv and look for all the Endurocross races. I hear this was a great race to watch with the leaders!
I moved up to 12th in points which really isn’t that bad, considering I missed a round from my injury in Spain. My goal is top 10 by the end of the season!
My next race is in two week up in Everett, Washington for the next EX round. Hope to see you guys there!
