Common Question three years ago

I was using my 08-0058 Chain Tool to flare a rivet master link, and the large anvil cracked. What can I do?

The best solutions

The failure you describe is generally caused by attempting to flare a master link rivet too far. Most rivet type master link pins only need to be flared from about 0.015" to 0.030". This is a very small amount, and generally best measured by a vernier caliper before and after flaring. In rough terms, a 0.30" flare can be achieved by less than one turn of the body bolt. Attempting to flare the rivet farther will push the link pin through the back plate and break the anvil.
