Bad Tool Design
BUYER BEWARE! IT'S A PIECE OF JUNK, BECAUSE IT DOESN'T PERFORM FOR THE BIKE THEY CLAIM IT'S FOR, NOR DOES IT DO WHAT IT WAS SOLD FOR AND INTENDED TO DO! LATER I FIND OUT THAT OTHERS EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING IN DISGUST AND REFUSED TO PURCHASED ANYTHING ELSE UNDER THIS NAME This motion pro shim tool #08-0020 advertised here and at their dealers, and is still being advertised as the correct tool to fit most Yamahas. And definitely to work properly on an 82 Yamaha XJ750J, But it doesn't. Other have found the same problem and attest to that on many Yamaha forum web sites. The tip end is either to short or the curve is manufactured wrong because it does not reach far enough to hold down the shim bucket. I wrote the tech support with a detailed explanation and they completely ignored it! Apparently so, since others have experienced it also, they don't want to admit it’s a worthless piece of junk.

Motion Pro does not list any applications for this tool, but it is a direct replacement and identical in size and shape to Yamaha’s OEM tool YM-01245. We do know and have confirmed that it will not work on the following models XZ550, XVZ1200/1300, FJ1100/1200, XT250L, XT/TT350, but this list is not complete so please check your factory Yamaha service manual to confirm this tool is required for your model and year. Quick Tip: The valve shim tool can be positioned anywhere along the circumference valve bucket away from the recess. The tip of the tool is not designed to be inserted into the recess of the valve bucket. The recess is to allow the shim to be pried up when the valve bucket is depressed. For specifications and proper use of this tool please reference your factory Yamaha service manual.

Valve tool worked like a charm on my 1981 Yamaha XJ650 Maxim. I can't vouch for other models, but it worked perfectly for me.
