The end of a five week stretch of racing ended in Morganton, North Carolina for the third round of the GNCC Series. Morganton is home to the Steele Creek GNCC which has an infamous track that winds its way through the mountains, up and down steep hill climbs and across a creek. Beta USA's Justin Sode and Cory Buttrick set out for another solid finish at the event.
Both Buttrick and Sode started off decent on the 11 mile track. Buttrick suffered a tough crash on the first lap setting him back from the lead group. Sode started towards the middle of XC2 but pushed forward. Sode comments, "I had a decent start making a few passes early in the race until I had a few minor problems. I rode consistent but just could not make up any time. I'm looking forward to the fourth round."
Consistency and experience leaves Buttrick 13 points out of 2nd in the XC2 class.
By the end of the race, Cory Buttrick digged deep to move his way from 11th to 7th place. Buttrick now sits in 6th place in points, only 13 points out of second place. Justin Sode finished in 14th place and sits in 14th overall in the XC2 class.
"This year we've learned a lot about the bike, the team, and our riders," says Race Team Manager Zack Huberty. "It's certainly been a learning year and I feel like we're moving forward in the right direction. We'll be on XC2 box soon enough; I'm confident in that."
GNCC takes a one week break before returning to the Big Buck GNCC on April 12th. Beta USA will return with its full XC2 team in South Carolina with Cory Buttrick, Jesse Groemm, and Justin Sode.
