The glorious Showshoe round of the GNCC series wielded weapons of the elements that would ultimately result in disappointment for the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing team. Riders Andrew DeLong and Ryan Sipes were joined by X Games victor, Mike Brown for what was hoping to be a battle well won. The custom course divided into West and East sections was shortened due to substantial rain fall that lead to running water on the slopes and standing water in the lower areas. The day was destined to become a race of survival and attrition.
Coming into the day with a wounded wrist, DeLong started 2nd off the line, but would soon succumb to the rocks and terrain, pulling off the course to avoid further injury to his wrist. Mike Brown would start off row 5, near the back and hang on for the first few laps until a log became wedged in his wheel, forcing him to dismount and detangle the object from the bike. After making a pit stop and recharging back onto the course, Brown became stuck in the mud and from that point on decided to ride with caution and get some time on the bike in those conditions. He would complete 8 laps and finish the race 12th in XC1 Pro. Support rider, Ryan Sipes would lead part of the race but suffer a crash during lap 2 in which he hit is knee and was forced to end the day.
“The race at Showshoe was really tough. The whole mountain is nothing but rocks, plus it rained a few inches the day before so it was super slick and muddy. I led the first lap and a half and then had a crash and hit my knee on a rock forcing me to retire for the day. I’m really disappointed because I was starting to build momentum in the series with some good results, but I look forward to coming back strong,” explained Sipes.
