Bearing race puller on Harley Touring bike
Well worth the money! 4-stars only because of my specific application. Not liking any of the solutions shown in various you Tube videos, for extracting the steering head bearing races, I opted to order this tool. I just received this new steering head bearing race puller, a few days ago, hoping it would work on my '08 Harley Ultra Classic. I am happy to report that it did the job. The upper bearing race came out fairly easily. The lower was much more troublesome, as the gap between the bottom of the race and the steering head frame was too narrow to get the lip of the race puller further under the edge of the race. (The lip of the puller is about 1/8" thick, and the gap under the race lip is about 1/16", with little to none of the race shoulder protruding into the neck channel). But,working with it very slowly, and carefully adjusting the puller to the exact diameter of the frame chamber, I was finally able to barely grab the bottom race and get it out. The only thing that would make this puller so much better would be if the lip was about 1/2 of it's current thickness, allowing it to fit completely under the edge of the bearing race. It could be tapered on the bottom side for strength, but needs to be a bit thinner to be an exact fit for Harley's. But, hey, it did the job, with some time, patience and coaxing. The only other comment is that I imagine by the time I need to use this tool again, the O-rings that hold the expansion segments together will have dried out and cracked, which looks like the only weak link to this tool. But, those are easily replaceable. All in all, well worth the money, to avoid damaging a critical component on the bike, which could seriously affect safety.
